How to unzip a file on the server

Upload the archive once, then use the Extract option in your control panel file manager instead of downloading and re-uploading every file inside it.

The file manager built into your control panel can extract a zip archive in place, on the server, without ever downloading it back to your computer. This is almost always faster than uploading files individually, and it is the recommended way to move a large number of files onto your account in one go — upload one zip file, then extract it where it needs to end up.

Steps to extract an archive

  1. Upload the zip file into the folder where you want its contents to end up — usually somewhere inside public_html.
  2. Open the file manager in your control panel and navigate to that folder.
  3. Right-click the zip file, or select it and look at the toolbar, for an option labelled Extract or Unzip.
  4. Confirm the destination folder when asked — most file managers extract into the same folder the zip is already in, unless you choose otherwise.
  5. Wait for the extraction to finish, then refresh the file listing to see the extracted files and folders.

Why this is quicker than extracting locally

If you extract a zip archive on your own computer first and then upload every file inside it, you are transferring the same data across the internet twice — once as the archive, once again unpacked. Extracting on the server means only the compressed archive travels over the connection, and the unpacking happens locally to the server itself, which is close to instant even for archives containing many thousands of small files.

Check the folder structure inside the zip first

Some zip archives contain a single top-level folder wrapping everything else, rather than the files sitting directly at the top level of the archive. Extracting one of these directly into public_html can leave your site's files nested one folder deeper than expected. If your homepage does not appear after extracting, check whether everything landed inside an extra subfolder and move it up a level if so.

What if there is no Extract option?

Every file manager included with a modern control panel supports extracting common archive formats, so a missing option usually means the file was not recognised as a zip — check that the file genuinely has a .zip extension and was not corrupted during upload. If the option is present but extraction fails partway through, the most common cause is the account running low on disk space, since extracting temporarily needs room for both the archive and the files coming out of it.

Creating a zip file on the server

The reverse is also usually available: select one or more files or folders in the file manager and look for a Compress or Archive option, which bundles them into a single zip you can then download. This is a convenient way to grab a full copy of a folder for a backup without connecting a separate FTP client at all.

Once your files are extracted and in place, finding a specific file on your hosting account covers locating anything that seems to have gone missing afterwards.
