FAQ Reseller Hosting

How many clients fit on a reseller plan?

It depends on your plan's real limits and how much each client actually uses, not a fixed number that applies to everyone.

There is no single answer, because it depends entirely on two things: what your specific plan's resource limits actually are, and how much storage, bandwidth and email each individual client site actually uses. Two resellers on identical plans can support very different numbers of clients depending on what those clients are hosting.

Why there is no fixed number

A plan sized for, say, a given amount of total storage holds far more clients running small brochure sites than it holds clients running large image-heavy stores or busy blogs. Bandwidth works the same way — a handful of high-traffic sites can use more of a plan's total allowance than dozens of low-traffic ones combined. Any number quoted without knowing what your clients actually host is a guess, not a genuine limit.

Check your actual plan limits, not an assumption

Your reseller plan's real storage, bandwidth and account allowances are listed in your control panel and on /reseller-hosting. Start there rather than working backwards from a number you have seen quoted elsewhere — plans and their limits vary, and what applied to a different provider's plan tells you nothing reliable about yours.

A more useful way to estimate

Instead of asking "how many clients", ask "how much does a typical client of mine actually use" — average site size, expected traffic, mailbox count — and divide your plan's real allowance by that. This gives you a working estimate specific to your own client base, and it is worth redoing periodically as the mix of what your clients host changes. If several of your clients run something heavier than average — an active online store, for instance — treat that estimate as an upper bound rather than a comfortable target.

This is also a pricing and packaging question, not just a technical one

How many clients your plan can comfortably hold interacts directly with what you charge and how you package your tiers — what is overselling, and is it safe? and how to price hosting plans both bear directly on this number.

Watch usage as you grow, rather than guessing once

Check your actual resource usage against your plan's limits periodically, not just when you set up. Client sites grow, a client adds more content or traffic increases, and a plan that comfortably held your accounts a year ago may not hold the same accounts today, even though the client count has not changed.

If you are approaching your current plan's limits, or you are not sure whether a plan will hold the client base you are planning, talk to us with the specifics — the real answer depends on your actual usage, not a number that applies generally.
