How to change your payment method
Update the card or payment method on file in your client area so future renewals do not get stuck on an expired one.
The card or payment method saved on your hosting account is what your renewals are charged to automatically. Cards expire, get replaced after fraud, or simply get closed, and none of that is unusual — the only thing that turns it into a problem is not updating the record before the next renewal tries to use it.
Where to update it
Payment methods are managed in your client area, not your control panel. The control panel — StackCP — has no concept of billing at all; it manages your website, not your account. If you are looking for a "payment" or "billing" menu and only finding file managers and email settings, you are in the wrong system.
Your client area is where you signed up, where invoices are raised, and where payment methods, renewals and cancellations are handled. Your control panel is where the technical side of your website lives. They use separate logins on purpose.
How to change your payment method
-
Sign in to your client area
Use the email and password you set at checkout, or the password reset link if you have forgotten them.
-
Go to your payment methods
This is usually under account details or billing settings. Look for a section that lists the card or method currently on file.
-
Add your new details
Enter the new card number and expiry, or connect the new payment method, exactly as your provider requires it.
-
Make it the default
Adding a new method does not automatically retire the old one. Check that the new one is set as default for future renewals, otherwise the next charge may still try the card you meant to replace.
-
Remove the old method
Once you have confirmed the new one is active and correct, delete the old card or method so there is no ambiguity about which one will be used next time.
A renewal that fails because the card on file has expired is the single most common cause of an unnecessary service interruption. If you have received an expiry reminder from your bank, update your payment method the same day rather than waiting for a renewal to fail first.
Paying in your own currency
Whatever method you add, charges are shown and processed in your local currency at checkout, and that is also the currency your invoices are raised in afterwards. See what currency you will be charged in if you want the detail on how that is decided.
If you cannot see a payment methods section
Interfaces vary between different account types, and the exact menu label can differ. If you cannot find it within a couple of clicks, the fastest route is to open the specific invoice you need to pay — most billing systems let you enter or update payment details directly from an unpaid invoice, which achieves the same result without hunting through settings.
If you genuinely cannot locate it anywhere, contact support and ask them to point you to it, or to update it on your behalf if that is an option for your account type.
Multiple services, one payment method
If you host more than one service with us — several hosting packages, a domain portfolio, an add-on service — a single saved payment method usually covers all of them. You do not need to update the card separately for each service; changing it once in your account settings applies it to future charges across the account, unless you have deliberately set a different method against a specific service.
Security of your payment details
Card details are handled by the payment processor integrated into the client area rather than stored as plain text by us — this is standard practice for any properly run billing system and not something specific to your account. If you ever have concerns about a charge you do not recognise, treat it the way you would any unfamiliar transaction: check it against your invoices in the client area first, and contact support if it still does not match anything on your account.
What happens after you update it
Nothing changes immediately for invoices that are already paid. The new method takes effect from the next invoice it is used against — typically your next renewal. If you have an invoice that is currently unpaid and you want to pay it with the new method right away, see how to pay an invoice to do that directly rather than waiting for the next automatic attempt.
